Bearspaw First Nation is an independent signatory of Treaty 7 and is one of the three Stoney Nakoda First Nations who signed Treaty in 1877.

To address a history of discriminatory practices as it relates to First Nations children, Canada is providing funding to establish a range of prevention programs and services intended to ensure that Indigenous children do not come to attention of child and family services. Bearspaw First Nation is establishing a prevention program to provide a range of supports to build strong and resilient families.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Youth Worker will play a vital role in supporting youth to develop the skills and abilities they need to grow into healthy adults. The Youth Worker will plan and lead a wide variety of programming designed to improve the overall well being of young people living in the community, this could include recreational activities, life skills programming, and support to plan for their future. The Youth Worker will also provide individualized support as needed and requested.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Program Coordination: Organize the daily operations of youth programs, ensuring services are delivered efficiently and effectively.
  • Community Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with youth and families in the community as well as with community partners to further the goal of offering a wide range of meaningful activities.
  • Client Support: Provide direct support to youth through the provision of regular programming along with individual support as needed. This could include connecting youth to additional supports and resources.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with other prevention programs to ensure a comprehensive and wholistic range of supports and services for children, youth, and families.
  • Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintain complete and accurate records of all interactions with families and youth and participate in compiling necessary reports as required.

Education, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Diploma in the following fields is helpful, Human Services, Nonprofit Management, or a related field. Equivalencies such as work experience and life experience will be considered.
  • Experience working with youth would be beneficial, preferably in a First Nations setting.
  • Strong understanding of Bearspaw First Nation culture, traditions, and history.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent people skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and program management software.
  • Ability to develop creative and effective solutions to client issues.
  • Ability to apply trauma-sensitive principles in all interactions.
  • Ability to provide immediate support and solutions during crisis situations.
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy and understanding.
  • Prioritize tasks and meet deadlines consistently whether on site or off site.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.

Employment Conditions & Hours:

  • Full-time, Tuesday to Saturday with evening and weekend work required to meet the needs of youth and families
  • Clear criminal record check along with a vulnerable sector and a child intervention check.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, reliable vehicle, and clear driver’s abstract.
