JOB SUMMARY:
In collaboration with the attending psychiatrist, physician, social worker(s) and other SHS staff, the mental health nurse (MHN) provides culturally safe, competent and client-centered mental health care. This includes mental health assessment, planning, implementation and case management within the mental wellness program(s).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care to support mental health and well-being
- Collaborate to develop personalized goals and related care plans
- Administer and assess effects of medication; provide client education and support as needed
- Educate patients and families about their diagnosis, treatment plans, coping, and self-management strategies to promote optimal mental health and well-being
- Provide supportive counseling, advocacy and life-skills development
- Manage psychiatry referrals and/or consultations
- Educate a variety of audiences on a range of mental health and addiction topics
- Other duties as requested
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Minimum of 5 years mental health nursing experience
- Working knowledge of the DSM-V5, mental illness and mental health nursing theory
- Knowledge of mental health treatment and resources
- Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act including managing Community Treatment Orders
- Strong suicide risk assessment and management skills
- Confidence to prioritize demands and ability to communicate effectively
- Understanding of trauma informed practices and experience working with Indigenous peoples
- A proven ability to work well with individuals from varying backgrounds
- Experience with or interest in working in community settings
- Computer skills relevant to the position
- Completion of an accredited nursing program
- Registration in good standing with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA), or College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
- Current Basic Life Support Provider Certification (BLS – Provider)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Phlebotomy certification
- Addiction experience
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:
- Class 5 Alberta Drivers License (or higher depending on vehicle type)
- Clean Driving Record
- A clear Criminal Record Check
